Frequently Asked Questions

There's no shame in waxing, and no shame in the questions you might have about it, either. Look below to see answers to the most common questions people are often too shy to ask:

How long should my hair be to get waxed?
You'll get the best results if you let the hair grow to about ¼ inch, or around the length of a grain of rice, before being waxed. This will ensure that the hair is long enough for the wax to grip, but not so long that it becomes painful to remove.

Do I need to prepare for my wax?

  1. Exfoliate the area to be waxed: Exfoliating the area before waxing can help to remove dead skin cells and other impurities that can make it more difficult for the wax to adhere to the hair. This can also help to reduce ingrown hairs.

  2. Avoid using lotions or oils: Applying lotions or oils to the skin before waxing can make it more difficult for the wax to adhere to the hair. It's best to avoid these products for at least 24 hours before your waxing appointment.

  3. Taking a shower or bath before your appointment can make it easier for the wax to adhere to the hair. It can also help to cleanse the skin and make it less sensitive.

  4. Wear loose, comfortable clothing: After waxing, the area may be sensitive, so it's best to wear loose, comfortable clothing that won't rub or irritate the skin.

  5. Avoid sun exposure: It's best to avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours before and after waxing, as this can make the skin more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation or sunburn.

  6. Inform your waxing professional about any skin condition you have

By following these tips, you can help to prepare your skin for waxing, making the process more comfortable and effective.

What is a Wax Specialist?
In order to perform waxing services you have to be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist in the state of Arizona (a nail tech license does not include/cover waxing). The reason we use the term Wax Specialist is because we have extensive training in this particular area of our license and its the main service we offer.

Can I wax if I'm having my period?
Yes, but do keep in mind that the area will be more prone to sensitivity and you may experience more discomfort than usual. In order to successfully complete the service, you will need to wear a tampon.

What’s the difference between a bikini line, bikini full and bikini Brazilian wax?
Keep in mind there is always a consultation included with your wax. We can always leave as little or as much as you want.

  • The Bikini line is just a a basic clean up right at the panty line following the inner leg (about two fingers wide) and the top front of the panty line.

  • Bikini Full allows you to bare it all in the front or you can leave a little like a landing strip, or a triangle (Butt strip is not included).

  • Bikini Brazilian allows you to bare it all from front to back (includes the butt strip). You can also leave a landing strip or triangle.

Do I have to get on all fours to get a Brazilian wax?
No, at Secret Service Skin, clients will  have a couple of different options for your comfort. The most common way is keens to chest, another option (best comfort especially if your pregnant) is to lie on their side to take care of the back area. This will save you the humiliation and is definitely more comfortable! Remember, when you have a professional wax specialist, they’ll take great care of you. If you have specific worries, don’t hesitate to ask. It's our job, to make sure you get the BEST experience possible, before, during, and after your wax.

Is it safe to have a Brazilian wax while pregnant?
Yes, you can still get a bikini or Brazilian wax. However, you may experience more skin sensitivity due to the hormonal changes your body's going through. We will make you as comfortable as possible during the service. For waxes during the last two months of your pregnancy, we recommend checking with your doctor first.

Just how painful is a bikini wax?
It depends on many factors, including your general pain tolerance, hair density, and whether or not you stay on schedule with your waxing service(s). Everyone's different, but many of our clients have said our waxing services are less painful than other experiences they've had. The wax and techniques we use make a big difference in your comfort level.

Can I get waxed if I have a sunburn?
We don't perform services on skin that's burned, irritated, or otherwise unhealthy.

Can I get waxed if I’m taking medication?
It's always best to refer to your doctor if you have any questions about any waxing services. For prescribed creams like retin-a or differin, we advise that you stop use seven days prior to your appointment and do not resume use until seven days after your service. We will not wax you if you're on accutane or have been in the past 6 months. It's very dangerous to wax while on accutane and a doctor's note will be needed to receive services. This is why it's so important to inform us of what medications you may be taking so we can provide you with a safe, comfortable waxing experience.

Is there an age limit/requirement for waxing?
Our policy is to require guests under 16 to have parental consent for bikini waxing services.

What if I have piercings and tattoos?
Will it hinder my experience in any way? Waxing areas with tattoos won't cause any damage to your art or your skin. In fact, waxing can help brighten your tattoo by removing the dead surface cells on top of it. For piercings, we recommend removing your piercing. If you can't remove it, your wax specialist will have to go around it which could result in leaving a couple of hairs that are too close to touch.

Do you offer waxing services for men?
Absolutely! Although the range of waxing services for men is different, we do have a comprehensive list of services to choose from. Unfortunately, we do not offer the "Manzilian" or Male Bikini/Brazilian, or Full Butt/Butt strip service(s).

How long does eyebrow waxing last?
To keep your brows tidy, 2-3 weeks is recommended with no tweezing in between.

Are there any possible after-effects?
Everyone's skin can and will react differently to waxing. A customized post wax skincare plan will be recommended for best results. With that being said over time skin can become custom to the treatment plan so at sometime we might need to" trick" the skin and try a different product. No product or process is perfect, and you might still get irritation even with using the professional recommended skincare, but not using it can cause MORE irritation.

  • Redness is the number one side effect, but don't worry it will subside over time. It could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days, depending on your skin sensitivity.

  • Bumps can be a result after waxing, and will subside within a few hours or a few days.

  • Itching may occur, but its best to not scratch or further irritate your freshly waxed skin. Itching or overly touching your fresh waxed skin can spread bacteria from hands and finger nails.

  • Ingrown hairs happen when hair gets trapped under dead skin. This happens often, So keep in mind the more you wax the hair gets finer and weaker and has a hard time poking through the skin, so its crucial that you follow up your waxing with a custom post wax skincare plan provided by your wax specialist.

  • Stubble can occur especially in the beginning of your waxing journey, and this is because everyone has 3 hair growth cycles, so its possible that the next hair growth cycle is starting to come through. Being consistent with you waxing and customized at home post wax care is key to great wax results.

I have cactus quills in my skin, can you wax them out?
Actually YES! The Teddy Bear Cholla or "jumping cactus" are the most dangerous cacti you could come into contact with in the desert. Their quills have tiny backwards facing barbs that make them very difficult and painful to remove. We have experience using wax to remove cacti quills. This is a special service that we offer that's not on our "book now" menu. If this is an emergency service you need; call, text, or email and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible.
